STATEMENT ON RECENT EVENTS, JUSTICE AND EQUALITY

Recent events in our country require us all to pause, to mourn, to reflect, and most importantly, to raise our voices to seek justice. The recent killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor have shocked the nation and the world. Their deaths are part of a long and shameful history in this country going back four hundred years, in which black and brown people have been enslaved, abused, unjustly imprisoned, murdered, discriminated against, and marginalized. Despite our Constitution’s guarantee of Equal Protection of the Laws, that promise has yet to be fulfilled for people of color who have been subjected to systemic racism for centuries. Attorneys and staff at Buckley Beal work every day to change that.

At Buckley Beal, Black Lives Matter. And for us, they have always mattered. We do not merely say the words – we live them. Even before this firm was formed and continuing since its inception, Buckley Beal’s lawyers have been honored to represent, advise and advocate for people of color. Over 50 years ago, attorney Ferdinand Buckley, father of partner Ed Buckley, stood for African Americans and all people of color during the civil rights movement. By doing so, he faced condemnation from many of his fellow members of the Atlanta Bar Association. Yet, he did not back down. That morality is the legacy of our law firm, a firm where we strive not just to talk the talk, but to walk the walk of fairness, equality and advocacy for those whose voices have been suppressed.

Buckley Beal’s employment lawyers have represented people of color from all walks of life in race discrimination in employment cases, as well as other aspects of our daily lives, successfully handling cases through trial and appeal. During the present protests and advocacy for black lives, Buckley Beal continues to advocate for equality in Georgia and throughout the country. We will continue to be active and dedicated advocates for those who have been marginalized because of their race, until our society changes for the better. We stand with those who are protesting police violence, discriminatory prosecution and those who are protesting discrimination of all kinds. We will continue to fight for equality for the duration of the existence of this firm and will hold accountable those who refuse to bend with the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
