Pregnancy Discrimination Widespread in Corporate America

A new study concludes that many women’s careers have suffered as the result of “pregnancy discrimination.” The study evaluated women at large corporations across the United States, and looked at data compiled over the last 20 years. The statistics showed that a definite bias exists against pregnant women both while pregnant and as working mothers.

The study included anecdotal stories of management suggesting women take unpaid leave because they may be a “liability” due to the pregnancy, receiving sexist comments, and being told the pregnancy/birth would have negative career implications.

Although federal law exists – the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 – makes it illegal to fire or hire a woman because she is pregnant (or plans to become pregnant), some employers will make excuses and/or justifications to hide pregnancy discrimination.

If you believe that you may have been discriminated against on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related condition, it may be possible to file an employment discrimination lawsuit.
