With heightened scrutiny being paid to sexual harassment and discrimination at the work place, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. has announced that the federal judiciary will take steps to ensure that its employees are protected from harassment and discrimination. The Chief Justice notes that the judiciary is “not immune” to such behavior. Last month Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit resigned following two reports in the Washington Post detailing allegations he had subjected former law clerks and other women to inappropriate sexual behavior.
Roberts stated “The judiciary will begin 2018 by undertaking a careful evaluation of whether its standards of conduct and its procedures for investigating and correcting inappropriate behavior are adequate to ensure an exemplary workplace for every judge and every court employee.”
Hopefully with the increased attention being paid to sexual harassment in the workplace – and the exposure of its widespread occurrence – more employers will take serious steps to eradicate inappropriate sexual conduct in the workplace.
